Nursing programs offered online are steadily on the rise and I believe the online college options will continue to grow and eventually phase out the “brick and mortar” colleges. It seems crazy to imagine that one day we may actually have to explain to children what it was like to attend college in the “old days." When all classes meant a a commute to an "old fashioned" college every single day in the hopes that one day you would earn your nursing degree.
Many students are on a waiting list at traditional Nursing schools, so online schools offer a great option for nursing classes. It’s finally possible to go to nursing school all the way through to earning your nursing degree, without quitting your day job. The flexibility to study on your own time has become attractive to many who want to further their career.
But with anything new there are challenges and Nursing programs are no exception. Unfortunately, there are scams that you should be aware of, so you can avoid being taken advantage of. Some Nursing programs offer an “easy” program, so buyer beware.
Whether you’re enrolled in a Nursing program online, or a traditional school, Nursing school isn’t a walk in the park and anyone who tells you any different is lying to you. The classes are difficult and you need to have a lot of dedication in order succeed and finally earn that nursing degree you dream about.
Some students prefer to go to a traditional Nursing school, because they need the classroom interaction with their instructor and other students. You must be self-motivated if you intend to attend an online college, and there isn’t always someone there to help when you’re struggling with course work. But, if you’re the shy type and feel you learn better alone, this may be your cup-of-tea.
Online nursing does have a lot of benefits. The option to work at your own pace does appeal to lot of people. Many prefer to stay home and learn, especially parents of young kids. But, don’t be misled by advertisements that try to scam you into believing that it’ll be much easier than the traditional route. You’ll still have deadlines and in some cases, it may even be harder because you have no one to answer your questions.
If you cannot make Nursing school your priority, then you’re probably better off finding another career path. Online schools are just as strict as traditional schools, when it comes to submitting assignments, participating in class discussions and attendance.
Many online Nursing programs are still not 100 percent online. Because nursing is a hands-on career, you will more than likely have to attend clinicals that are assigned to you each semester. But employers will honor and value your degree online, just as much as they would if you attended a traditional school. The most important thing to point out here is that you need to make sure you are attending an accredited school. This is also important if you ever plan on furthering your education. Most schools will not accept courses you have taken from schools that aren’t accredited.
It is not important for you to be a computer nerd to attend online Nursing programs. A basic knowledge of computers is all you need. There is usually tech support if you need assistance with computer issues.
While online nursing is great for some, it may not be a good fit for others. Online Nursing school entails mostly textbook type study. If you are the type that must watch and have everything demonstrated for you, then you may not be a good candidate for online programs. If you enjoy working at your own pace and you are self-motivated then online school may be perfect for you.
There are some states that don’t recognize online Nursing degrees and will not allow you to take the NCLEX. It is wise to call the state board of Nursing, where you live and ask them if they accept virtual Nursing school, before you fork out any cash.
Watch out for scammers, who promise you an easy ride and always do a background check on the school before you enroll. Ask friends and coworkers if they have heard of the online college you’re interested in attending and find out what they know.
No matter which route you chose I hope you’re successful! Nursing is a great career path.
