Congratulations are in order, if you were just recently accepted into nursing school. Hopefully, you're enjoying your summer, but you know that it's the calm before the storm.
You are opening a new chapter in your life and I can honestly say, that nursing school will be one of your most challenging, yet rewarding experiences ever.
It's a new adventure and one you can be more prepared for if you have some survival tips, to help you through the first few weeks of the new semester.
1. Be nice to everyone
Faculty and students alike. Remember that you will probably be with the same class for the duration of nursing school. So, don't make enemies. You will need the help of your fellow students to get through this ride. Be as helpful as you can. As far as faculty, they have the ability to make your life a living hell. Trust me when I say, be nice to them. Be the volunteer. It will help you get noticed and may buy you a little leeway when you make mistakes...and you will make mistakes, every nursing student does.
I know it's a lot to take in during these first few weeks, but try to soak everything in. Write everything down and pay attention to everything your instructor says.
Most nurses are tactile learners. I taught medical equipment for years and the majority of nurses must touch and play with things to learn. There are of course the exceptions to this and everyone has their own strategy when it comes to studying. So know what works for you and stick with it. Personally, when I was in nursing school I had to re-write everything in my own words for better understanding. I carried index cards every where with me and read them every chance I got. But ultimately, know what works for you.
Find some study buddies
Even if you would rather study alone, studying with others helps tremendously, and will help you learn. Many times you will gain a different perspective on something you don't quite understand, if you are in a study group. It's interesting to see how others process information, you can learn from them and visa-versa.
This last tip is by far the most important. If you think nursing school will be easy you're delusional. It will be one of the most difficult challenges you will ever encounter. Always remember there is a light at the end of that tunnel and you will get there, just like the "Tortoise and the Hare" story. But you must keep your priorities in order. Nursing school must be your life. You must eat, breathe and sleep it. You won't survive if you don't make it a priority, above all others.
Good Luck! If you would like to help other nursing students by offering your tips to them, please comment with tips below!
