There are literally thousands of medical terms and most nurses are masters of medical terminology. Even if you don't know what a particular medical term means you can usually decipher it based on what you already know.  Here are some that you may not have heard of. Quite interesting.

Trichotillomania-Uncontrollable urge to pull your hair out.  (I think I have this one during every shift).

Genital Rectraction Syndrome (no joke),  This one is when people actually believe their  genitals are shrinking and being pulled inside their body....Wow!

Elephantiasis- The patient's  arms and legs, and other things, become huge due to parasitic worms.

Capgras Syndrome- This is when you don't believe what you see in your own reflection and believe that your friends and loved ones are being impersonated by someone else...Weird!

Proctalgia Fugax- This is a pain in the butt. No, not your mother-in-law. This is a condition that causes spasms that sometimes are mistaken for actually needing to use the bathroom.

The weenis - This is actually the skin on your elbow. Don't run around saying your weenis hurts though!!

Pneumono ultramicro scopicsili covolcano koniosis (one word). -black lung.

Hippo pota monstro sesqu ippedal iopho bia (again one word)-The fear of long words.....No wonder!

Maple Syrup Urine Disease- an inherited disease with a symptom of sweet smelling urine.  This is a very serious condition that can actually result in coma or death.

Cocksackie-a virus which can cause hand, foot and mouth disease.

A cutaneous horn. This is an extremely weird condition where you actually grow a horn. Made from the same thing as fingernails. Don't believe me? Look it up.  Tree man had this and it's an effect rather than a cause. His was caused by the HPV, but it can also be caused by burns.

Labyrinthitis-A balance disorder that makes you very dizzy.
