A nurse in Hillsboro, NM has been charged with murder in the death of her fiancé. Law enforcement in the state say she tried to make it look like an accident. It took investigators a year to seal the case against the woman.
“They stayed tenacious, little pit bulls, they grabbed a hold of it and wouldn’t let go,” explained Sierra County Sheriff Glenn Hamilton, referring to the investigators.
On March 20, 2015, a call was made to a 911 operator “I think he’s having a respiratory arrest,” Harris’ fiancé, Kandi Adams reported.
She added, “His 02 sat is down to like, about 62 percent, his color is horrible, I need help out here now,”
Adams told the 911 operator that she was a nurse and that he was having difficulty breathing. The dispatcher told her to begin CPR until their arrival, but when they arrived just minutes later, Adams said, “Guys, he’s gone!”
Paramedics noticed some inconsistencies with her story right away. But at that time weren't sure how he died. One of the things paramedics pointed out was that Rigor Mortis had already set in. This is a temporary condition when the muscles stiffen due to chemical changes post mortem. But it does not occur for at least thirty minutes after death.
“It took us a little while to really uncover some of the inconsistencies, we had to wait obviously for the medical examiners report,” explained Sheriff Hamilton.
As the investigation continued Harris' son discovered that Adams had cashed a check from his father's account for $5,000 three days after his death. Adams also showed Harris' son a "will" that she said proved he had left all his assets and belongings to her. She did present a will, but it didn't appear to be Harris' signature.
When the autopsy report was released it left no doubt that Adams had lied. She was an operating room nurse at Mountain View Regional Medical Center and it was there that she stole Propofol, a drug that is used only in medical settings where close supervision and respiratory support is required.
According to the sheriff. “She’s the only one that could have administered those drugs to him,”
Adams was arrested and charged with murder, tampering with evidence and forgery earlier this month. she did admit that he was already dead when she called 911. She is being held on a $100,00 cash bond.
