JACKSON, Miss. — The newborn daughter of a surgeon died just a week after her mother died giving birth.
Dr. Nikki Shoemake-Patterson, 40, passed away on June 1 at OCH Regional Medical Center in Starkville, Miss. There was no cause of death released, but a friend of the late surgeon said she died of a pulmonary embolism during "natural labor."
After Patterson died, her daughter was transferred to Batson Children's Hospital where she also died.
The daughter, Aubrey Caroline Patterson's obituary read, "Aubrey Caroline was surrounded by family as she peacefully passed into her mother’s arms in heaven on Wednesday, June 8, 2016,"
According to the Mississippi Department of health statistics, the state has double the national average of maternal mortality rates. There are 40 maternal deaths per 100,000 births in the state.
