While most nursing departments love throwing pot-luck suppers, because it's exciting to see what others bring and you never know what you're gonna get. One nurse took this a step further when she gave her resignation via a vanilla cake complete with frosting.
Sara Childers, a nurse who worked at a psychiatric hospital in Washington decided to notify her superiors of her resignation by bringing in a cake with the words, “Western State Hospital: I quit!!!”
Childers had long since tired of the management at the facility where she said nurses were not appreciated, were underpaid and overworked.
Childers was an employee of the facility for seven months and she accused the hospital of needing to treat its own disorders. According to Childers, management didn't focus on training their employees effectively, instead, they were more interested in punishing employees for making mistakes that wouldn't have been made had they've been trained correctly.
The federal government hired an independent consultant to observe the facility and they reported that many employees were not washing their hands between patients and were often not wearing gloves.
“It’s such a large institution that could do so much good,” she said, “but it’s just one of the worst places right now.”
"I'm not the kind of person who is going to shut up...and not do anything," Childers said.
The Washington state Department of Social and Health Services said:
“This was quite likely the most unique ‘letter’ of resignation ever submitted to Western State Hospital. Meanwhile, we thank the 2,000 dedicated staff members who do come to work day and night because they find it both challenging and rewarding to help our patients on their journey to recovery.”
Childers hopes that her creative way of resigning will prompt management to corrects many of its problems. Nice job Childers. This takes the cake!
