Inspectors were recently surveying a Human Resource Center in Yankton, S.D, found that the psychiatric nursing director lacks the federally required master's degree to be qualified for the position.
But according to some state officials who are defending the nurse, while the nurse doesn't have the federally required credentials she has a lot of experience.
Many other issues were discovered during the inspection of the facility in February.
"This hinders the direction of the nursing department and the level of care provided by nursing personnel," inspectors wrote in a report to the state in March.
Troy Jones, the new administrator says Jackie Gilbertson, the nurse in question, has more than forty years experience. She became the director of psychiatric nursing in 1998 after working at the center since 1976.
"The individual in this role, I feel, is very qualified," Jones said.
The state assured the facility that they would provide Gilbertson additional training, but Gilbertson was already set to retire this summer.
There had been several previous audits of the facility Where Gilbertson was deemed qualified for the position.
