Balvinder Toor, a registered nurse has been suspended from nursing for four months for inappropriately accessing patient's information at MidCentral District Health Board in New Zealand.
Toor accessed the clinical electronic records of at least 34 patients on 173 occasions in the period between October 1, 2011, and October 30, 2012, for reasons other than patient care. It is unclear why she accessed this information, but it was not pertinent to her employment as a nurse.
When a nurse logs into the electronic system at MidCentral District Health Board (MDHB) they are warned that accessing patient data is confidential and that a log is kept of every access to the data. Toor ignored the warnings and continued to access the information.
Toor was found guilty of misconduct and admitted her guilt. She was terminated from her position at the facility and was fined $3400.
