U.S Surgeon General, Vivek Murthy says that medical Marijuana can actually help some patients. He has made several comments that may help convince the justice department to redesignate marijuana on a federal level .
During an interview on 'CBS This Morning," Dr. Murthy said that the effectiveness of marijuana had to be scientifically shown and there would be much more information coming.
"We have some preliminary data showing that for certain medical conditions and symptoms, marijuana can be helpful," said the new surgeon general
"I think we have to use that data to drive policymaking, and I'm very interested to see where that data takes us."
According to the current schedule, marijuana is a schedule I drug, Drugs in this category have a high potential for abuse are said to have no medical value what so ever.
So far there are twenty-three states and the District of Columbia that have legalized medical marijuana and Washington, Colorado and Oregan have legalized the drug for recreational use.
The Justice Department has not responded to Murthy's statements.
