Job Versatility. Nurses can work in so many different places. Hospitals, doctor’s offices, insurance companies, home health, travel nursing…and the list goes on. If you become tired of one area or specialty, you can always move to another specialty, or work environment. You can go from working in a busy ICU to working in case management, where you sit at a desk all day and never have any contact with patients. The options are endless in nursing.
Trust. Nursing has been voted the most trusted profession. So people will look up to you and respect your opinions.
Great Income. Nurses are not rich by any stretch of the imagination, but their income can ensure them a comfortable life.
The ability to continue your education. You can start out as an Licensed Practical Nurse and then continue on to become a Registered Nurse, with either a two year associates degree, or a four year bachelor’s degree. From a bachelor’s degree you can go further to a master’s degree and become a nurse practitioner, certified registered nurse anesthetist or nursing professor.
Flexible shifts. You can work three twelve hour shifts a week and have four days off. Yes, the shifts are rough and you do get pretty worn out, especially if you work them consecutively, but it’s great to have four days off a week.
Cool Clothes. You get to wear comfortable clothes to work. Scrubs are awesome. They’re like wearing pajamas and come in all sorts of cool colors. You may even get in the habit of wearing them when you are at home. You never have to worry about what you are going to wear at work and can save a fortune on buying work clothes.
Work with people who share the same interests. You can work with educated people who have the same interests as you. You interact with doctors and other nurses as part of you work day. The medical field is a community and it’s nice to feel like you’re part of it.
Rewarding Career. You get the rewarding feeling that you are making a difference in the lives of others who need you. Because of you education you are able to help others with your medical care. Nursing can be extremely rewarding.
Help your Family. You can care for your family members and give them advice to keep them healthy. With your medical knowledge you take good care if yourself and your family members.
Nursing is an excellent, rewarding and exciting career. Once you have your education and degree, no one can ever take that away from you. If you are trying to decide on a career and are contemplating a degree in nursing, please think long and hard. Nursing school is difficult and requires dedication. Your nursing education must be your priority always and you will miss many family get-togethers, but the rewards for your hard work will pay off and you will be happy you made the decision to become a nurse.
